The Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar, which usually corresponds to June or July in the Gregorian calendar. This festival has a long history and is celebrated not only in China but also in many other countries with Chinese communities.
The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival is closely related to Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet from ancient China. Qu Yuan served as an official during the Warring States period but was exiled due to political struggles. Heartbroken by his country's decline, he drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The local people, who admired him greatly, rowed boats to search for him and threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent fish from eating his body. Since then, dragon boat racing and eating zongzi (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves) have become the main activities of this festival.
Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is marked by various customs and traditions. One of the highlights is dragon boat races, where teams paddle their colorful boats to the rhythm of drums. These races symbolize the efforts of the villagers to save Qu Yuan. Another popular tradition is making and eating zongzi. People stuff glutinous rice with different fillings such as meat, beans, or dates, then wrap it in bamboo leaves before boiling it. Zongzi comes in many flavors and styles, reflecting regional differences across China.
In addition to these activities, people often hang calamus and mugwort at their doors to ward off evil spirits. Children wear colorful amulets for protection, and adults drink realgar wine, believed to enhance health and repel diseases. The Dragon Boat Festival serves as a time for family reunions and honoring ancestors, reminding everyone of the importance of loyalty, patriotism, and respect for tradition.
In recent years, the Dragon Boat Festival has gained international recognition. Many cities around the world host dragon boat races and cultural events to celebrate this vibrant holiday. For Chinese people, the Dragon Boat Festival is more than just a day off; it is a celebration of culture, history, and community spirit.
